the space between

The Space Between
Karen Mirza, Brad Butler, 2005, 12mins, 16mm, UK, colour, sound

Time and space shattered into shards of light. Footage shot in India and thoroughly reworked in the optical printer into a rigorous, flickering duality. – Mark Webber

gestalt

Gestalt
Thorsten Fleisch, 2003, 5mins, video, Germany, bw, sound

Four-dimensional quaternions (fractals) are visualized by projecting them into three-dimensional space. Instead of modeling objects of human imagination, the realm of mathematics is explored. Only the variables of one equation (x[n+1]=x[n]^p -c) were used.

Jim Brouwer, 2005, 2mins, video, UK, colour, sound

A tonal electro-acoustic composition was the starting point for this found footage film in which image and sound are united and ski slowly into an alpine landscape.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present
Gregory Kurcewicz, 2004, 5mins, 16mm, UK, colour, sound on CD

Shot in-camera on Super-8 film, the viewer is pushed towards and through the flickering pure white and electric blue of a flowering blossom tree against a clear summer's sky. The soundtrack was played by the artist on a Tambura, an Indian drone instrument.

To the Happy Few

Yes? Oui? Ja?
Thomas Draschan, 2002, 4mins, 16mm, Austria, colour, sound

This decadently analog, hand-scratched totem of celluloid bin diving plays with our ideas of femininity, its power and pleasures. This ever-playful music film consistently surprises with its brisk and intelligent edits, gloriously saturated aquatic imagery, electric animation, and kitsch commerciality.

They Were Only Numbers
Freya, 2005, 4mins, video, UK, colour, sound

Filmed on a Fisher Price Pixelcam, They Were Only Numbers is an abstract film that operates in the margins of ambiguity. A haunting soundtrack steadily and persistently builds and fades. Images in motion suggest that a wider canvas has been fragmented and is struggling to be seen.
